We know intuitively that we learn by experience. Without the process of actively reflecting about those experiences, and questioning what they mean, learning doesn't really happen.

The focus of this module:

  • The distinction and the relationship between management and leadership.
  • The principles of achieving results through other people.
  • How to identify and overcome the common management pitfalls.
  • How to build Emotionally Intelligent behaviours.
  • How to define motivation and explore motivational theory.
  • Practical motivational ideas, tips and techniques.
  • Coaching techniques − develop a 'pull' style to gain buy-in and commitment.

Pre-work:

We will be referring to a lot of concepts and theories throughout the module. To ensure that the classroom time can be spent on discussion and application in your context, it is essential that you complete the following pre-work for this module. Be prepared to discuss your reflections during the workshop.

Reflection

a) What attributes and skills have your best and worst managers had?

b) If we asked them, what do you think your Direct reports would say you could start doing more of?

c) Think about a current management challenge which a coaching conversation might help you to get clarity on. It must be real, still to be resolved and that you are comfortable sharing with someone else – bring it along with you to the first module
